May 16, 2025 – San Francisco, CA – ePlant, Inc. is proud to announce its pivotal role in the Avanade Intelligent Garden, a groundbreaking installation at the 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show that blends nature and cutting-edge technology to explore the future of sustainable urban green spaces.
Led by Devon Young, Senior Experience Design Leader at Avanade, the project was developed in close collaboration with Microsoft, landscape designer Tom Massey, and architect Je Ahn. The Avanade Intelligent Garden showcases how artificial intelligence (AI) and real-time data can transform tree care in urban environments. At the heart of this innovation is the ePlant TreeTag, a wireless sensor that delivers continuous, physiological and environmental insights into tree health.
Each TreeTag deployed in the garden captures critical data directly from the tree on radial growth, movement, ambient light, temperature, and humidity. This information is transmitted in real time to a centralized platform developed by the Avanade Team, where AI models, trained on plant science data from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), interpret the signals to monitor tree vitality and identify early warning signs of stress.
“Our mission has always been to help trees tell their story,” said Russell Tillitt, CEO of ePlant. “It’s exciting to see our TreeTags enabling real-time data streams in the Avanade Intelligent Garden, led by Devon Young and her incredible team. This project not only helps care for the trees in the exhibit, but also shows how AI and data can support healthier, more resilient green spaces in cities around the world.”
Visitors to the Avanade Intelligent Garden can interact with a web-based interface that brings the trees’ insights to life, allowing them to “ask” a tree how it’s feeling, whether it needs water, or how the surrounding environment is affecting it. This immersive experience aims to educate the public about the hidden dynamics of tree health and the possibilities for the future of data-informed care in the face of climate change with emerging technologies like AI.
The TreeTag’s low-power, long-range wireless design makes it ideal for scalable deployment in both rural and urban landscapes. It operates autonomously using solar energy and can be installed on the tree in minutes, making it one of the most accessible tools for arborists, researchers, and city planners working to preserve tree canopy and ecological health.
